Subaru Euro Sales (By Model) : 2000-2019

When you are a smaller player in any field, you have to be something unique to stand out. Subaru found its niche by becoming a maker of all wheel drive cars with unusual boxer engines, especially for export markets. It endears itself to people who want that sense of adventure and off road ability to facilitate that.

Which brings us to its European adventure. The market is crowded and Subaru had that something different to establish a faithful following. Has it been enough to make a success of selling cars in this region? Time for a walk down memory lane.

2000-04. Sales and market share were modest, with the Forester, Legacy and Impreza the basis of the company's efforts in the region. By 2004, a third of 1% of total sales was reached or put another way 50,000 registrations. Nothing to write home about but not a bad effort either. The tiny Justy went from being a rebadged Suzuki Cultus to a Suzuki Ignis.

The Justy G3X based on the Suzuki Ignis

2005-09. An almost identical pattern was followed in the next five years, apart from a small sales dip. Registrations peaked at 55,000 in 2006 and then dropped to 45,000 by 2009. As expected, market share was falling gradually too in tandem with reduced sales. The Tribeca was tried but wasn't a success. The Justy now switched to being a Daihatsu Sirion based car.

2010-14. Sales fell some more, 10,000 in this five year period and share was now down to just over a quarter of a percent.. The Justy nameplate finally departed and was replaced by the Toyota sourced Trezia in LHD markets only. While not a bad car, it certainly didn't sell in numbers. The Forester and Legacy were still going quite well and were reinforced by the XV, which took off as the Impreza went downward.

Catering to those wanting a sense of adventure in the great outdoors

2015-2019. The volume of cars sold shed some more, this time by another 8,000 units and share ended up at 0.2% by 2019. There is still a solid core of supporters but they have dwindled over the past decade. It seems Subaru is happy for a minor presence in Europe, while the bulk of its sales are elsewhere.
