Türkiye Car/LCV Sales : 2025

Registrations were up 11% in 2025, a record at 1,084,500 units. Registrations are booming with 2025 being up 60% on the average for the previous ten years. Local manufacturers enjoy some protection and they dominate the higher end of the chart.

With that healthy increase, many increased sales but lost market share. The Share column highlights which ones won (green shading) or lost (yellow shading) in that regard.

Renault and Fiat have been exchanging top spot for the last few years. Fiat has dropped down to fourth so Renault is now clearly ahead of Fiat and the rest. It seems Renault is selling the Dacia Duster (photo below data) as its own model in Türkiye. That will help Renault maintain a strong position in the market.

Toyota is making a concerted effort to bridge the gap, up from seventh last year. BYD is up to ninth while MG took a dive. Local brand Togg (picture above) is doing well despite only starting to sell vehicles in 2023.

Mazda isn't in Türkiye because the e-call (emergency call) system used in cars, requires the SIM card to be used but Mazda was unable or unwilling to meet this requirement so it is not possible for the vehicles to be sold here. It sounds rather strange.

Türkiye Passenger Car Sales : 2024

Türkiye is the new name for the country in case you are wondering about the spelling.

Registrations for December were up 7% and up 2% for the complete year so very settled. Renault has been the most successful brand in the 21st century but Fiat hit the top for the first time during this time covered, in 2022. However, Renault is back on top due to Fiat losing ground rather than anything it did.

And Fiat certainly lost ground. A lack of new models and intense competition could be reasons but there may be others.

Chery is a new arrival and a surprisingly successful one in such a short time too, bumping VW into fourth. Chinese brands are starting to make their mark here. BYD has agreed to build a factory here, with a capacity to make 150,000 cars per annum. It is expected to open in 2026. Jaecoo made an immediate impact.

Togg (picture at top) is a local start up brand, producing a compact electric SUV with more models to follow. It had a handy 51% increase. KG Mobility had a very good year, up over 700%. BYD was up even more so that factory will come in useful at that rate.

Turkey Passenger Car Sales : 2023

The Turkish market is subject to fluctuation swings and 2023 is one on the positive side. December registrations were +46% and for the year +62%. A strong result and a record year. The previous best was 757,000 in 2016 so 2023 was 205,000 more than that!

Turkey is odd in that it is one of the few countries in Europe with import duty to protect local manufacturing. It has no doubt helped in getting some manufacturers to open plants there but I wonder if its continuance is necessary. I assume Fiat assembler Tofaş would strongly support ongoing protection and its market share of 13% would suggest it is having a beneficial effect.

Chery (picture below) popped up in March, Leapmotor in April, Togg in May, Tesla September, BYD November and Hongqi December. The first two and last two are from China and Togg (picture just above) is a Turkish manufacturer of electric cars. Nearly 20,000 registrations in a handful of months isn't bad going.

I wonder why Tesla popped up in September with 4,700 sales. Was that for the YTD compacted into one month? The brand started selling here in May 2023 so it may be an accumulated figure. This sort of thing can distort the true picture and the 77% increase in September might therefore be inflated to a degree.

The 'Diff' column shows market share change. With this being a buoyant market, many of the makes with decreases in market share would still have sizable sales increases. Some of the monthly sales are rounded figures so there seems to be some estimating going on. Still, it gives us a picture of what's happening.

Turkey Sales : 2022

Registrations for December were +99% and that is not a typing error. For 2022 it was +5%, with the last three months pushing into positive territory. It provides some tariff protection for local car assembly which favours the better selling brands listed below. The '+/- diff' column below is for market share change.

Fiat suddenly takes over from Renault and it seems that won't be changing any time soon. I don't know when Fiat was ever top here before but if so not for a long time. Not that Renault did badly with an 11% volume hike but that wasn't enough.

Turkey Top 50 Sales By Model : 2021

I colour coded the list to show where brands historically originated. As there is import duty, models made locally are obviously at some advantage. However, it's not like Asian manufacturing countries where the duty is prohibitive for imported cars.

Top of the list is the Fiat Egea (Tipo) as above and made by Tofaş (Türk Otomobil Fabrikası Anonim Şirketi). The Toyota Corolla is next, a 4-door car again made in Turkey and the only Toyota on the list. Then mainly Euro models interspersed with Asian brands.

Turkey Sales : 2021

Turkey is running its own race as local economic conditions dictate how sales are going. Registrations for December were just -46% and -8% YTD. Earlier in the year it looked like 2021 was going to outdo a good 2020 but sales crashed over the last four months.

The '+/-' column below is comparing market share variance for 2021 with 2020. This sorts out which brands are improving their share. Renault and Fiat have both lost ground to the chasing pack of VW, Toyota and Hyundai. Peugeot and Opel were off the pace in '21. It's all somewhat jumbled with some decisive movements taking place.

Point of interest: Renault has been the leader here for many a year with the odd hickup and it looked like 2021 was going to see it deposed by Fiat. However, a late rush of registrations over the last two months enabled Renault to scrape home by less than 500 units.

Turkey Production : 2019-20 (By Brand)

Turkey has a reasonably sized car industry that benefits from some protection. 855,000 passenger cars were assembled for a 13% drop in volume. Not a bad result considering the year but Turkey did have stronger registrations than most so that would have helped.

Renault accounts for over a third of PCs made. The Clio makes up over 80% of that with the Mégane making up the rest. Toyota makes the Corolla sedan and C-HR SUV. The Tipo (Egea) is Fiat's contrtibution.

As for commercial vehicles nearly 1.3 million in total, down 7%. The Transit van is a huge contributor and mainstay of that sector of the vehicle industry. Combining both car and cv, the fall was 11%.

Renault Production Spain & Turkey : 2016-20

Renault has plants in these two southern European nations. In 2020, they made 650,000 cars, down from 900,000 just five years ago. Perhaps comparing 2016 with last year (819,000) would be a fairer way to analyse things. There is also a plant in Portugal making gearboxes.

Spain: 2020 was tough on volumes, enduring a 28% fall. The two car plants are in Palencia and Valladolid, just 60km apart. I'm not sure what the rationale was behind that decision but it seems strange. Three models are made there, including all Captur and Kadjar.

Turkey: The factory is at Bursa, in the north-west of the country. Volume has been quite consistent here over the past five years. There was a switch back to the Mégane model from the Fluence but that didn't seem to affect the flow of vehicles. The Clio is the mainstay of production here.

Turkey Premium Comparison : 2018-20

Audi is normally in the shadow of two other premium marques but it took the opportunity of booming  registrations to leap to the top. The BMW Group sales were up but its share of the pie was heavily reduced. Land Rover, Jaguar and Lexus were the only three that increased in both of the previous years.

Turkey Car Sales : 2020

Registrations for the year were +58% which isn't a typing mistake. The 610,000 sales exceeded the previous decade's average. Loan deals were offered to buyers from the 1st of June and sales soared from that point. After a poor 2019 and early 2020, pent up demand and favourable loan terms created an environment conducive to this upsurge.

With the unusual growth, few brands showed a decrease in registration (yellow below). Grey is for an increase but share decrease and green exceeding 58% growth. Renault maintained its top spot and along with Fiat improved its lead substantially. VW has fallen quite sharply. Opel and Citroën are on a roll but Hyundai, Honda and Nissan aren't so fortunate.

Renault Production Spain / Turkey (By Model) : 2015-19

A car to capture your heart?

Renault brand cars are made in both of these countries while back home the emphasis is mainly light commercial vehicles. There are two plants in Spain and one in Turkey.

Spain. One facility is located in Palencia in the north of the country where the Mégane and Kadjar are assembled. The other is in nearby Valladolid catering for the Captur and Twizy models. Between them both, they make close to half a million units per annum.

Turkey Production : 2017-18 (By Brand)

Sales in Turkey have been falling and appears to be having some impact on production volume. Just over a million passenger cars were made there, down 10.2% on 2017. Only Honda managed an increase, but its not a large operation so had little impact. The Renault Clio and Toyota C-HR are two of the main models made in Turkey.

Turkey Vehicle Production - Brand : 2015-16

Total production was up 9.4% in Turkey for 2016. A large gain in passenger cars more than offset a smaller loss in commercial vehicles. This year was a record in units made.

Passenger Cars. The main reason for the improvement was Fiat with a 156% increase in volume. The reason for that was the new Tipo model, which accounted for nearly 80% of Fiat assembly.
