Finland Passenger Car Sales : 2025 (Jan-Aug)

Registrations were down 19% in August and also -5% YTD. Toyota has been the best selling brand since 2017 and is clearly intent on staying there. Its market share so far this year is down on the previous three years but is still well ahead of Volkswagen in second place despite being down 24%.

VW was dethroned by Toyota but is still a popular brand here with 12% of the market and up from fourth place in 2024. Sales volume improved to the tune of 36%. Škoda gained slightly (+2.5) while Volvo registrations were down 28% and Mercedes-Benz dropped 25%.

BYD arrived during 2023 and MG during 2024 and while both have settled in OK, Chinese brands are not prominent. BYD has gone down 30% this year and MG was up 808%.

The top selling models were:

Toyota Yaris Cross - 1,659
Toyota Yaris - 1,462
Toyota Corolla - 1,290
Toyota RAV4 - 1,289
Volvo XC60 - 1,186
VW ID.4 - 1,147 (photo below)
Škoda Enyaq - 1,144
Kia Ceed - 1,137
Nissan Qashqai - 1,104
VW ID.7 - 927

Estonia Car/LCV Sales : 2025 (Jan-Aug)

Registrations were down 43% in August and down 40% YTD. This is due to a tax on cars introduced in 2025. In 2024, registrations were poor early in the year, then took off toward the end of the year. December up 105% as people understandably acted to avoid the price rise. The total year was only up 12%, showing how low the earlier part of the year was.

Toyota lost the top spot to Škoda last year but has decisively taken the lead back in 2025. Volkswagen is third, just ahead of Kia. The top six on 2024 are the same, just stacked slightly differently.Toyota has five of the top ten models, with Škoda chiming in with a couple.

The top selling models were:

Toyota Corolla - 578
Škoda Octavia - 468
Toyota RAV4 - 376
Škoda Kodiaq - 311
Kia Sportage - 291
Toyota Yaris Cross - 272
Toyota Yaris - 213
VW Tayron - 208
Dacia Duster - 204
Toyota C-HR - 169

Latvia Top 30 Car Model Sales : 2024

Toyota as the leading brand has three of the top seven places. Škoda as the number two marque in the overall standings is likewise well represented. The Dacia Duster (picture above) is the sixth most popular model. Below is the Nissan Qashqai in tenth place.

As this is passenger cars only, it is unusual to have models like the Renault Trafic on the list but it also has more vehicles not shown here but counted as light commercials. That's not usual so perhaps they are vans with seats and sold as an MPV.

Latvia Car/LCV Sales : 2024

Latvia car and light commercial sales are as below. Toyota has led since 2020 and is still well clear although it did suffer slightly in 2024. Škoda has moved into second but parent company VW is coming back. It was the leader until 2019. Renault had a strong increase but has some distance to make up on third place.

Estonia Car/LCV Top 50 : 2023-24

Škoda dramatically took the lead off Toyota as the best selling brand. They also knocked the two Toyota models at the top of the 2023 off the leaderboard and replaced them with their own top two. Will Toyota respond in 2025?

I wanted to put one of the top Škodas as the photograph above but they weren't very good so Toyota's more natural picture of the RAV4 was chosen. It was top last year. Some of the pictures on car company websites are ordinary.

The VW Tiguan came in fifth, up ten places and the picture had a natural appearance so it's below the list. Renault did well with the Captur and Clio, plus Citroën with the Berlingo. Some of the changes from last year are extreme but fewer sales will more likely generate that outcome.

Estonia Car/LCV Sales : 2024

Registrations were up 57% in December 2023 but amazingly they were up 105% for December 2024. As you can imagine, December is now a big month for car sales here. After a poor start to the 2024 year, a late rush got it finally to a 12% increase. A tax being implemented in 2025 is the reason.

Toyota has lost what appeared to be its inevitable lead which it has enjoyed for most of this century. Škoda has taken that now but will it maintain it? VW had an impressive 2024 and is now third. Audi got up to third last year but it seems that wasn't sustainable.

A big shout out to the agency that releases this data. Sales statistics are hard to come by which is a shame as there is clearly a demand from the public to see it.

Finland Top 50 : 2023-24

Toyota is the top brand here and it shows in the chart. The Corolla took the top spot in 2020 and has held it since. It was down in 2024 but still well ahead. Before that it was the Škoda Octavia and the year before the Nissan Qashqai (picture above). They are curently sixth and seventh.

The Yaris cross moved up to second and Tesla's model Y fell back as a result. Overall European brands are the most common but Korean ones do well too.

Finland Passenger Car Sales : 2024

Registrations were up 9% in December but down 16% for the complete year so a solid end to a depressed market. The data below compares market share, not sales volume movement. The winner here is Toyota, a brand that has put emphasis on rallying in a country that loves that type of motor sport. Toyota currently accounts for nearly one in five passenger cars sold here.

Tesla did a belly flop as did Peugeot and Opel. BYD has arrived so we will see how that progresses as it builds its dreams. MG timed its arrival poorly as Chinese electric vehicles now meet tariffs in Europe. Of course, all vehicles going to China are hit with import duty so nothing to see here.

Estonia Top 50 Sales By Model : 2023

The top two models were from Toyota, followed by two from Škoda. Audi then had a couple with a Kia between them. Some of the movements here are extreme as evidenced by the percentage figures. There are some other unique things about the list as well shall discover.

First, all eight of the models Škoda sells here made the top 50, despite it not being the best selling brand. Second, Audi is usually the third German Premium marque or maybe has parity, but not here. While BMW and Mercedes-Benz do not have a single model on the list here, Audi has no fewer than eight! Third, there is only US model here, the next is back in 82nd place.

Estonia Passenger Car Sales : 2023

Registrations were up an impressive 57% in December and up 12% for the year in total. Toyota became the best selling brand in 2004 and apart from one year has been top ever since. In 2023, it fought off  Škoda (picture of the Kodiaq below) which has improved its share to 14.6% from 13.5% in 2022. On the other hand, Toyota has fallen from 21.7% to 18.3%.

The last couple of years Audi took to drinking Red Bull and has taken flight. Tesla is still to make the impact it has elsewhere in Europe but is trying to make up for lost time. Land Rover and Lexus were both well ahead of last year's total.

Finland Top 50 Sales : 2023

The Corolla has maintained its top spot which it has held since 2020. The Tesla Y came from 14th to second but has its work cut out trying to dethrone the Corolla. That said, it went close to doing just that.

The chart shows how popular Toyota is here as is Kia to a lesser extent. Overall Euro brands are the most popular but by no means dominant.

Finland Passenger Car Sales : 2023

Car sales were down 6% in December but +9% for the YTD figure. In total 86,100 sales for cars and add another 1,400 for camper vans, which are not included below. The 'Diff' column shows market share change.

Toyota remained comfortably on top although losing ground for the time being. Kia took a bit of a tumble as did Nissan and Ford. Tesla is moving up strongly after a few years with little progress. For now, Chinese car brands are absent from the list except for Maxus and BYD.

Finland Top 25 Passenger Car Models : 2008-10

The world was sailing like the Titanic into a disastrous financial situation. How would Finland fare during this time?

In 2008, registrations were up 11% and close to record levels. Toyota was the leading brand with 18,600 units sold and Volkswagen was close behind at 16,500 sales. They were well ahead of the rest.

The VW Golf/Jetta was clearly the leading model with nearly 7,700 finding homes during the year. Toyota was not relying on one or a few models to do the donkey work with five making the top 25.

Ford, Volvo and Škoda rounded out the top five brands. Volvo were doing particularly well with the small 3 door C30 Hatchback and Škoda the medium sized Octavia. The latter made up 70% of total Škoda registrations.

So with the global economy in trouble. how would 2009 go for the Finnish car market? Registrations were down 35%. Painful but not as bad as some. Toyota gained share with sales only down 22%. VW had a slight gain in its share but lost ground to Toyota.

Audi moved to sixth up place and Mercedes Benz ninth. Kia went the other way, falling sixth to fourteenth. Cee'd sales were down 60%.

The Golf/Jetta combo stayed to with the Toyota Avensis up five placings to second. The Nissan Qashqai also improved with a minimal loss of sales. It was responsible for 60% of Nissan sales. the Octavia was a solid third ranked model.

For 2010, registrations rebounded 24%. They had been 137,700 in 2008, 89,100 a year later and now they were 110,500.

Toyota's sales were up just 4.5% and VW closed the gap with its registrations up 26.5%. The Golf/Jetta improved by over 2,000 but the Avensis was down despite the overall upturn.

One make did poorly and that was Honda, with sales down 18.5% and dropping from seventh to twelfth place. It has never returned to the top ten and is now a marginal presence in Finland.

Estonia Top 25 Car/LCV Models : 2008-10

This small Baltic state had a rocky ride through this period. In the early 2000's things were booming and spending reflected that. As a global recession hit, car buying was understandably affected. In 2007, new car registrations exceeded 31,000 units.

In 2008, the numbers dropped 22% to 24,600. The top 25 for that year are to the right. Japanese brands were the most popular. Toyota led the total market with 3,100 sales, Honda was next at 2,350 and Volkswagen at third with 1,750 registrations.

Mazda was fourth in total and had the leading model, the 6 exceeding the 1,000 mark. Citroën was the fifth most popular brand, followed by Škoda, Nissan and Ford. Hyundai and Kia rounded out the top ten.

Toyota had an impressive five models making the list and Honda three. Despite Volkswagen doing well overall, it only had the one model in the top 25.

The question on everyone's mind at time would have been how will 2009 fare with the world economies in such turmoil?

As we all now know, the news wasn't good. In Estonia, registrations slumped 67%! The best selling model was doing half of what was the case a year earlier.

In times of change, rankings can be volatile but at the top at least Toyota remained #1 with an increased share of the total market. Renault went from twelth to second with the Mégane now the best selling model.

Volkswagen held on to third place in the brand rankings with the Golf/Jetta, Passat and Tiguan all in the top 25.

Elsewhere, Honda slipped two pacings to fourth Mazda dropped from fourth to tenth. Peugeot came back from the nineteenth to eighth. How would 2012 go?
The worst of the economic meltdown was over and 2010 was the start of better things. Total registrations were up 29% to 10,300 with Toyota still top but Škoda had moved into third place and looking good.

Renault held onto second in brand ranking and still had the top model. The Škoda Octavia and Fabia had useful gains, the latter moving into the top ten for models.

The Volkswagen brand dropped from third to seventh and again only had one top 25 model. Nissan was tenth but the Qashqai was doing so well, it accounted for 3 out of every four cars sold under that logo.

In 2023, sales will be over 22,000 and well ahead of the 2010 but not quite up to the 2008 figure. That's a good thing if it's now at a more sustainable level.

Finland Top 50 Model Sales : 2022

Japanese brands have six of the top ten spots in the chart below. Five of them are Toyotas! However, once one delves deeper down the rankings, Euro models then predominate.

Estonia Top 50 Sales By Model : 2022

Toyota is the main brand here with some resistance from Škoda and Kia. VW is also doing OK. Asian brands crowd the top spaces with European models to the fore further down the list.

The RAV4 is by far the most popular model while the VW Golf was eleventh last year but is unable to make the top 50 this year. Interestingly, the top eight places are filled in pairs by brand.

Estonia Sales : 2022

Registrations for December were up 12% but for 2022 were -9%. The '+/- diff' column below is for market share change. Toyota pulled away strongly and now has a decisive advantage. In fact, it's unusual to see such a high market share for a manufacturer in an open market. Supply issues are having an impact and Toyota seems to be prioritising Europe, a region where they have comparatively speaking underachieved. Audi and Mercedes have had stellar success and many higher priced marques have done well.
