Liechtenstein Car Sales : 2026 (Jan-Apr)

Registrations were up 11% YTD. In 2025 they were down 11% for the full year, so not totally unexpected. The release of data is not quick but at least we get some. Annual sales by model were also once on the menu, but not anymore.

Volkswagen was the long standing number one brand here but since 2020, it has been contested by others. BMW has led twice and Mercedes-Benz once. However, in 2026 VW has established a healthy lead. In a small market, volumes are more changeable than alpine weather but for now they lead comfortably.

Luxembourg Passenger Car Sales: 2026 (Jan-Apr)

Registrations were up 3% in 2026. Things tend to be very stable here, unruffled even. It's financial sector accounts for nearly a third of GDP, although they does want to diversify the economy.

German brands hold the top four places here. Then one could also add German owned Škoda to take all five leading brands. Chinese brands are yet to have much impact, although the ever growing 'Other' figure - which isn't revealed to us - could contain many brands from that source.

Liechtenstein Car Sales : 2025

This tiny principality of 40,000 people and 160 square kilometres or 62 square miles makes a living mainly manufacturing quality industrial goods and financial services. It obviously pays as can be seen by the best selling brands.

Registrations are down 11% in 2025. Compared to the previous ten year average, it was down  21% YTD. It is the lowest taol since 1976! I know, it's tragic that  have data going back that far.

BMW is currently on top, a palce it last occupied in 2020. It has relative advantage over Mercedes and Audi but with such small numbers, change is a constant. VW was a long term leader here but this is the second year it has been back at fourth place.

Luxembourg Car Sales : 2025

Luxembourg is a multilingual principality with French being the most common language. Ethnically they are mainly Germanic, as is their preference in cars. French brands do well here too. Registrations were up 1% in 2025 but down 3% when compared to the average for the last ten years. In other words, very stable as one might expect.

Volkswagen overtook Renault in 2006 and has remained at the top ever since. VW has lost some market share so far this year yet for now it retains top spot. As the economy is strong, premium marques are well represented toward the top of the list to the right. Mercedes-Benz (up) has partially closed the gap with BMW (down) while Audi is about the same as 2024.

Overall, European brands dominate, with Korea having some success. Japanese makes aren't that strong and the Chinese push hasn't been that effective here so far.

As for the sales figures for models, it is all but impossible to find anything. I wish there was access to the top selling models, but no. Maybe in the future a more open data policy will improve the situation.

Liechtenstein Sales : 2024

Registrations were down slightly 2% to 1,564. That's not a lot but from a small principality of just under 40,000 people as expected. Many premium marques do well here too. Mercedes-Benz jumped to first place with a 25% increase. Volkswagen was down 21% so changed places with M-B. Aston Martin increased over 600%!

With any smaller volume market, things can bounce around more so things could be quite different in a year's time.

Luxembourg Passenger Car Sales : 2024

Registrations were down 7% in December and also down 5% for the complete year. It's a market that VW has led for so long but BMW is pressing for change. It's obviously an affluent place with so many premium marques figuring prominently although Mercedes-Benz and Audi didn't have a great year. The Hyundai and Kia siblings were both up but the Stellantis trio Peugeot, Opel and Citroën were not.

Smaller markets are more volatile so things can change rather quickly. A trend I've noticed in 2024 for Europe is SEAT improving but its spinoff brand Cupra not so.

Liechtenstein Top 50 Models : 2023

The numbers are tiny but they tell a story so here they are. With Japanese brands not that popular, it is surprising that one makes the top of the list, albeit with a reduction in registrations. European marques are dominant.

Liechtenstein Sales : 2023

Registrations increased by 4% in 2023 and 1,590 passenger cars were sold but for the better years, 2,000 units were exceeded. Still, for a small Principality that's quite a few cars. This market is similar to Luxembourg albeit on a smaller scale.

The top four are comfortably ahead of the rest with premium marques doing well. Then a sizable gap to some mainstream brands. However, overall premium marques seem to have lost a little ground to the more value priced ones. VW had its third year at the top although it wouldn't take much change to have a new leader.

It's nice they are open with their data, an example some other countries should try to emulate. The 'Diff' column shows market share change.

Luxembourg Passenger Car Sales : 2023

Registrations for 2023 were +17%. That's the first increase after three decreases although they weren't large ones. The total is the best over the past four years.

The fact that premium brands are so strong would indicate a very comfortable material lifestyle. The 'Diff' column shows market share change. With a market as buoyant as this is, many of the makes with decreases in market share would still have a sales increase. VW is always top, the next three take turns swapping places. Cupra overtaking SEAT is a common theme.

Liechtenstein Top 53 Models : 2022

It's nice to see the openness that allows us a look into the Liechtensteiner's car buying preferences.

Surprisingly a Toyota model is top of the pile, the Yaris (picture on left). However, that is quite an aberration due to Euro brands being the most popular.

USA models did quite well, the Dodge Durango even making it onto the chart (picture on right). I'm not sure if that will be sustained but Dodge outsold brands like Peugeot here so it has a popularity in this tiny landlocked land.

Liechtenstein Sales : 2022

Markets don't get much smaller than this. It's nice they openly share data and if I know about it it is published here. German marques are always popular in German language regions and here is no exception.

Registrations for 2022 were -6% on the corresponding period of 2021. The '+/- diff' column below is for market share change. Being so small, even a few sales and positions can soon change.  Audi and Mercedes jumped closer to BMW and Tesla is eyeing them all with sharper pricing to entice customers away from the others.

Luxembourg Sales : 2022

Registrations for December were -3% and for 2022 were -5%. A flat year with little change. For a small market, Luxembourg is very stable regarding car sales fluctuations. By the way, the '+/- diff' column below is for market share change. VW remains the top selling brand, a position they have held since passing Renault in 2006. The two Stellantis brands Peugeot and Opel both enjoyed success.

Liechtenstein Top 49 Sales By Model : 2021

Tucked away in the European Alps is this tiny principality. They have a very sound economy and many can afford to purchase premium cars. They are also open with their data, as long as one is patient. The list is colour coded and that shows how strong Euro brands are.

With small numbers, things can change quickly. Top one year, well down the next. Unusually a van style vehicle is the best selling for the year. Then second the Toyota Yaris came from deep in the chasing pack to second place. So not everyone buys premium. Last year's top model fell to seventh.

San Marino Sales : 2021

Registrations were +3% whereas for the first six months it was +25%. That was a common occurrence where the hope of revival was stymied by the semiconductor shortage and ably assisted with Covid. So slightly up on last year but still short of some of the recent years prior to 2020, another pattern repeated in virtually all other countries.

VW leads from Audi with Suzuki falling away. Toyota/Lexus had a poor 202 and came back in '21. Still, in small markets, it doesn't take much to change fortunes quickly.

Luxembourg Sales: 2021

MG will face an uphill battle to gain acceptance

Registrations for cars and light commercial vehicles* were -2%. The '+/-' column below is comparing market share variance for 2021 with 2020.

VW is comfortably ahead although no brand has a commanding share. There is a clear preference for German brands with French ones also but to a lesser extent. Japanese and Asian makes are not overly sought after.

*I normally would have just passenger cars but I failed to get the 2020 data for that so I asked Statistiques Luxembourg very nicely if they could oblige but they responded with a resounding silence.

27 January 2022

Liechtenstein Sales : 2021

Registrations for December were +4% and +8% for the full year. That isn't enough to reach recent annual numbers but it is a solid result nonetheless. The '+/-' column below is comparing market share variance for 2021 with 2020. So which brands were able to improve their share?

VW was bumped out of the top spot last year after years of leadership. I guess you could say the empire struck back in '21 and emphatically so. Premium brands which took control last year didn't fare so well this year, opening the way for VW. Toyota is moving up and will perhaps break up the German monopoly of the top four places in the future.

Liechtenstein Top 30 Models : 2020

This is a small, landlocked state in Europe. Quite a few cars are sold here considering its size. So what sells here? The top 30 (actually, it's a top 36 models but who's counting?) is well endowed with German premium models. The numbers are small so even a variance of a few sales from year to year has models going up and down like yo-yos.

The VW Golf did have a substantial drop in sales, plummeting from first to seventeenth! The Renault Zoe went the other way in an even more spectacular manner, up to third.

Luxembourg Premium Comparison : 2018-20

                                               This is the one, apparently

If you were judging the principality on car sales data, one could be excused for thinking the country is safe, predictable. German premium is a safe call, while they are under warranty at least. I think they are too common and an uninspiring choice.

The BMW Group keeps a solid lead thanks to the assistance of MINI. Volvo is doing well elsewhere but hit a speed bump here. JLR, Alfa Romeo and Lexus are all in a consistent retreat. All very predictable.

Luxembourg Car/LCV Sales : 2020

Registrations for the year were -18%  and -10% on the previous year's average. Green shows an increase and yellow the opposite. VW retains its top spot over the three German premium marques, despite having its lead cut. Škoda jumped three places to take 5th placing with a 12% increase in registrations. Renault and Peugeot had substantial falls.

I put Jaguar and Land Rover as one entity due to the data being inconclusive regarding which one got which sales. Apparently, that is how it is supplied to Statistics Luxembourg.

San Marino Car Sales : 2020

Registrations were -26%, not unexpected. The total sales of 861 numbers aren't huge for this small principality but still interesting to me nevertheless. Three brands lead by some margin, VW, Suzuki and Audi. Things can change quickly in a small market so what happens for the rest of the year is open.
