Japan Car Sales : 2025 (Jan-Sep)

Registrations were down 2% in September but up 5% YTD. Import Brands were +12% and +8% respectively. The importation by local brands of cars made overseas at their plants has always been minimal. For now it is experiencing an upturn, with September up 73% and YTD + 42%.

Of the overseas made Japanese brand imports, Honda's figure YTD was 30,500, Suzuki 28,500 as the two main brands. The overall total was 74,000 cars which is still a small amount relative to total sales of Japanese brands but surely a sensible direction to take.

Import brands made up 6.2% of total registrations. In an open market such as this, it is a strangely low percentage. They certainly can't be accused of not supporting their own industry.

Domestic brands: Toyota and Daihatsu suffered a drop in sales volume in 2024 due to scandal but both have returned to normal volumes again. It was other Japanese brands that benefitted from the scandal and obviously they are now the ones slipping back. Mazda is an exception with market share up, although it is a small player here.

Import Brands: Mercedes-Benz is the only import brand to exceed 1% market share although BMW is close to that. The Tesla figure is an estimate and may be slightly on the low side. Jaguar sales have farcically ceased altogether.

I find sales by MG Rover odd but they must be cars brought in that are second hand but counted as new registrations here. I wonder how many registrations are of that nature.
