With import duty in a smallish market, you don't get a lot of choice. It could also be argued that most countries have too much variety, far more than necessary. Regardless, most sales are achieved by a few brands. Perodua is a local manufacturer of Daihatsu vehicles and although losing some ground is astill miles ahead of the rest.
The data below compares market share variance in the '+/- Diff' column, green shading shows which brands achieved a positive share. A few brands don't report sales but most see the wisdom of doing so. Total sales are about 100,000 short of where they have been over recent decades.
Geely has acquired a share of Proton and is providing vehicles for Proton to assemble locally. Geely wants big things from its Malaysian partner so we will have to see if ambitions are realised.
