Japan Top 50 Sales By Model : 2021

Toyota dominates regular car sales and Daihatsu (owned by Toyota) is a strong brand in the tiny Kei car sector. They are a powerful combination. I put them in the chart below shaded yellow to show how broad their coverage across the top 50. The other Japanese brands are shaded blue and collectively they match the Toyota twosome but nothing more than that.

At the top is the Honda N-Box, an immensely successful Kei car and a model that keeps Toyota off the podium. Another Kei model, the Suzuki Spacia is a strong selling unit but got bumped out of second by the facelifted Toyota Roomy (The Tank was withdrawn in 2020).

The Toyota Yaris slipped from third to fifth but that was more than compensated by the new Yaris Cross model. The third generation Nissan Note (pic above) got into tenth spot as well as being named the 2021-22 Japanese car of the year. Mitsubishi managed just one model to make the list, the eK Kei car, a model it shares with Nissan (Dayz). The only foreign model to make the cut is the MINI, which isn't one model but a brand. Still, it's that or nothing for imported models.
