Mauritius Car Sales : 2021

Data is a little slow from Mauritius but as they say better late than never. It's an island to the east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Car sales were up 12%, not a peak year but well up on the last decade's average.

To show who's gaining market share, increase and decrease are based on market share so some with decreases in share have in fact increased sales. The current top four all gained market share but fifth to eleventh all lost ground. The gap between the haves and have nots widened in a striking way, not seen elsewhere to this degree that I can recall.

Kia has been consecutively the best selling brand since 2017 when it displaced Nissan. Nissan and Kia had been taking turns leading the rankings for a few years. However, It looks like Nissan is unlikely to challenge in the immediate future. Suzuki has had a good year, as has MG and Mazda. The economy is stronger than many may be aware so premium brands do very well.

243 electric cars were registered this year, up from 134. That's only 3.3% penetration but moving up. Nissan accounted for over half, presumably the Leaf. Hybrid cars went from 390 to 535, now at 7.5% of the total. Over 2,500 used hybrids were imported and as they drive on the same side of the road as Japan (the left) I assume they are sourced from there.
