The chart below changes markedly in 2007 because the supplier of the data changed their system of classifying cars, giving the total a boost. That happens sometimes. Some brands seemed to do very well in that year, but as to whether it was the new system or just coincidence I cannot say.
Sales gathered pace nicely until the economic problems that gripped the world around 2009 started to have an impact in that year. Mazda held a commanding share of 18.2% in that year. Honda, VW and Nissan each improved their position nicely and few actually went backward in the number of sales.
