Proton Global Model Sales: 2019-22

Perodua was established in 1985 and became Malaysia's sole car brand until the arrival of Perodua in 1992. It initially made rebadged Mitsubishi cars and over time progressed to having more input into the cars it manufactured. Proton was the dominant domestic brand but in 2006 Perodua took over and has since taken commanding control of the market.

Geely bought a 49.9% stake in the company in 2017 and from then the brand has made progress in getting back some of the share of the Malaysian market it surrendered. It hit a low of 12% in 2018 and by 2021 had doubled that.

The data below is a breakdown of global sales by model but as exports have dwindled, the figures below are mainly for the home market. The 2019 column obviously isn't complete. The pictures of the car models shown are typical of the sort you get in Asia.

The Saga (top picture) is a small 4-door car and is consistently a strong selling model since its introduction back in 1985. the X50 is a compact crossover that was introduced in 2020. The X70 is a medium sized SUV (from 2017), the Persona small 4-door car (1993), then the Iriz (above) compact 5-door hatchback (2014) and finally the Exora (2009) 7-seater smallish MPV.

Proton has plans for expanding its sales volume, which is currently just over the 140,000 unit mark. That sort of sized car manufacturer that Proton currently is would not be considered large enough for reasonable economies of scale so expansion would be highly important. If the product is good, then it shouldn't be too difficult to achieve, especially if more export markets are pursued in due course.
