Australia Car/LCV Car Sales : 2023

Registrations were up 12% in December and also up 13% in 2023. Toyota is took 18.3% of total sales which is its poorest since 2016, a late upturn in sales prevented it from becoming the worst this century.

Mazda, Kia, Hyundai and especially Mitsubishi lost market share while Ford is benefiting from the Ranger pickup being available in greater supply. How Kia and Hyundai must wish they had a pickup in their arsenal. Tesla is beavering away and is now rewarded by entering the top ten.

BYD has arrived and while electric car sales aren't that strong here, this company is doing well to attract a good number of punters. The price is relatively sharp so no doubt that helps. MG is a direct competitor and has shown what is possible.

As for electric cars, they commanded 7.2% of the sales so far this year. Hybrids and PHEVs took 9% of all vehicle registrations. Not much penetration there but a lack of a unified vision isn't helping with each state being responsible for how they use inducements, er, I mean incentives in this regard.

RAM continues to sell in numbers I didn't think was possible. The cost of conversion to right hand drive isn't putting punters off. Land Rover and Ssangyong are both going well and for Chery, it's the second time around after its first failed effort.

The 'Diff' column shows market share change. Data source: Vfacts.
