UK Car Market : 2022 Model Summary

The UK's SMMT gives us the top ten best selling models and while I feel they could be a little more generous, we must be grateful for any crumbs that fall from their table. I hope they read this and smile, then do something about it. How about a top twenty?

Anyway, for December Tesla did what it does best and that is continue with its feast or famine supply system. That was a spectacular end to the year. The Nissan Qashqai did very well as did the MINI but Tesla stole the show for this month anyway.

Turning our attention to the full year, a fairer picture is painted. The Qashqai ended with a near 7,000 advantage over the second placed Vauxhall Corsa. The Tesla Y jumped to third place with the Ford Puma and MINI coming next.

Electric cars are the thing these days, enjoying almost evangelical levels of support. Once the SMMT staff stopped singing, clapping or waving their hands above their heads, they released the best selling list for BEV vehicles.

Tesla's taking the top two places should surprise no one after what we saw in December. The locally produced Nissan leaf did OK as did the MINI but production for the latter is being moved to China.

As for fuel types, full diesel models are down to just 5% of the total. Petrol cars still command 42% of registrations and full electric cars 16.6%. That leaves 36% as a hybrid of some sort.
