Toyota/Lexus Production : 2020-21 (By Nation)

Volume was down 10% in 2020 but rebounded by 9% in 2021. Considering issues afflicting the car industry it was a surprisingly good result. Let's break it down into greater detail.

Asia: 65% of all production is here. Of that Japan contributes a half which would work out a third of the global total. In units, that nearly 2.9 million. China's volume is 1.65 million, 29% of the Asian total and 19% of worldwide production.

North America: 1.8 million assembled vehicles and 21% of the grand total. The USA had two thirds of that amount and 7.5% of the global output.

Europe: Just 8.5% of all Toyotas roll out of factories in this region. Turkey and France are the largest by number.

South America: Now we're getting into very small numbers, 314,000 to be precise. Brazil and Argentina share the workload.

Africa: 114,000 Toyota vehicles started life in this continent, virtually all in South Africa.

Summary: In many countries, import duty means local assembly is a must in order to have any impact. Many Asian countries fall into that category so the number of countries with plants is high. Toyota has responded proactively and benefitted accordingly.
