South Africa Passenger Car Sales : 2020 (By Brand)

The data below has been put together with difficulty. Figures are either spot on or occasionally educated estimates. Naamsa are the source of registrations for the country and the web had ample data that expanded on what they released. During the year that all changed. Data from Naamsa became more basic and alternative sources suddenly curtailed their supplementary offerings. In other words, this may be the last of anything like detailed data for South Africa.

The RSA had a sales drop of 30% in 2020. I believe registrations would have been reduced anyway but the corona virus drove it down much further than naturally would have happened. This is the lowest point since 2002 and 30% below that last decade's average.

Some time back I was harangued by an RSA resident convinced the data was wrong because Toyota is comfortably the top selling brand. He was right...if LCVs were included. So to be clear the data below is for passenger cars only and excludes the very popular bakkies (pick-up trucks to everyone else).

VW held top spot with an increased majority over Toyota (no bakkies counted here remember). Renault
fared the worst of the top ten with 39% drop in sales. Suzuki managed to pull off an increase and in the process almost got past them.

Ford advanced its reliance on LCVs with a 37% slump in passenger car sales. Both BMW and Mercedes are now coy about sales being publicised and with their sales downturn, I can see why. Nissan sales halved and sub-brand Datsun is being wound down globally so expect them to disappear.

Data source: Naamsa.
