Genesis started out as a Hyundai model in 2009, and it became a separate marque in 2017 with the G90. Cracking the premium market is deceptively difficult as brand recognition and reputation is so important. Saying that, 2020 became a decisive year in that sales have suddenly spiked.
In its home market, it was unable to equal Mercedes-Benz sales up until 2019 but suddenly zoomed past it in 2020 with a whopping 91% increase and up to third place for the entire Korean market. Getting into SUVs helped but the G80 is a passenger car and its sales doubled.
Keeping things in perspective is the fact that the home market was what drove the 72% global gain. 108,400 registrations were local, amounting to 82% of the total figure below in the chart. Admittedly, the domestic figure is retail sales and the global figure represents factory sales but they don't vary that much in relevance.
So for now Genesis is hugely reliant on loyalty back home but surely improved export sales will be a high priority. The GV80 pictured below seems to be contemplating that very thing.
