Germany Car Sales : 2020

The total of 2,917,000 for 2020 just exceeded the previous low of 2010 by a mere thousand units. The next time the total was lower was way back in 1989. Can 2021 deliver a reversal of fortunes?

Registrations were up 10% in December, softening the YTD figure of -19%. The country has carefully tried to balance the Covid outbreak with keeping commerce functioning. Therefore, the end result is a good one although 2021 is already proving challenging with another virus flare-up.

Despite limiting the damage as best possible, few brands were able to increase sales (green, below). Fiat managed to break even and Tesla made a somewhat belated impact on the German car scene. Like other markets the SEAT spin-off Cupra and Volvo's Polestar are new entries that will be watched with some interest.
