USA / China JLR Comparison : 2010-18

Two very different markets despite being similar in size. Over the past nine years, the USA has averaged 15.6 million sales and China 18.2 million. The US started out in this period as the bigger market for JLR but China took over. However, a sales slump in China for 2018 has the US back as the bigger market for JLR.

The data:

The USA has seen solid growth over the time with the split between the two brands 75/25 on average. China started with a strong bias toward Land Rover but Jaguar has come on more rapidly, going from 10% of the total to 33%. Overall an 80/20 split.

I would have thought JLR's penetration would have favoured the US, but no. JLR US has 0.51% share and in China 0.66%. More Land Rovers are sold Stateside but the reverse for Jaguar.

The summary: China became every car makers favourite market when sales were climbing and profits were generous. The gravy train has pulled into the station and shows no sign of continuing its journey. If trends continue, the US will pull away from China as the latter slips back.
