Below is a chart that shows UK production by manufacturer. It then has UK passenger car sales. Finally exports in excess of sales. In other words, subtracting UK sales from production gives the export number. Then at the bottom it shows whether the UK is a net exporter or importer of passenger cars. The figures represent thousands so three zeros need to be added.
2017 | Prod | UK | Export | 2018 | Prod | UK | Export | |

A few 2018 production figures are estimates, because Nissan and Infiniti were combined, as was JLR. I split them and that is where I had to estimate. All producers had a surplus of exports except Vauxhall. UK brands not listed, such as Rolls Royce, Mclaren and Aston Martin come under the 'Rest' figure. Otherwise, all other car brands such as VW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are 100% importers. (I could have put BMW in with MINI and it would have become a -5 rather than a +167).
The UK is a net importer by 36%. In other words, more cars come in than go out. The industry has not been looked after like other countries have done with theirs. The models that are made in the UK are not well supported by the British public either, as if getting behind what is made at home is of no advantage to the economy. No, really. Some people think that. For those reasons, the nation will remain a net importer of cars.
This post is also great - do you have numbers for earlier years?
ReplyDeleteYes. Click on 'Nation - UK Prod' in the labels column. They are scattered through that list but not hard to find.
