The 1300... |
In 1968 Dacia started making the Renault 8 under licence as the Dacia 1100. Until 1972 about 37,500 were made. In 1969 the 1300 model was added (Renault 12) and in total nearly 2 million were produced. The Nova was a local model, a small 5 door liftback that was released in 1995. Later it became the SupeRNova and in turn the Solenza but I stick to the Nova name in the production chart below.
In the 1980's increased competition meant Dacia was struggling to compete with newer import models and in 1999 Renault took a controlling stake in the company. Nothing much happened at first until the Logan arrived in 2004 and suddenly Dacia were moving forward. 200,000 units was then achieved.
When the Nova finished, there was a gap until its replacement arrived which was the Sandero 5 door hatchback. That was quickly followed by the Duster SUV and the 300,000 figure flashed by. Things were really happening now as the Lodgy compact MPV was introduced along with its sister vehicle, the Dokker leisure activity vehicle (we won't call it a LAV). These latter two are made in Morocco.
Below are production numbers for the Dacia brand from the year 2000 as part of the Renault Group. Prior to that I don't have data, although I believe in 1998 Dacia made 106,000 vehicles.
Data source: Michel Freyssenet & Renault.
Over 1.5 million Logan vehicles have been made with the Dacia logo. The Sandero has passed the million mark in 2015. Yet still more Dacia models have been sold under the Renault brand, depending on where they are marketed.
One would have to say that this no frills budget brand from Europe has been handled well by Renault and in turn it has been a huge success for the Renault Group. Without this acquisition, Renault would not be nearly as well placed as it is now.
