The passenger car market was up -11% for December and up -4% for 2021 in its entirety. Import brands were -15% and +2%. Mind you with only 7% of the total registrations imports deserve a break.
In the chart below, we are looking at market share, comparing 2021 with 2020. Green is more share and yellow less. The green is mostly concentrated in the lower end of the chart, the higher placed local brands favouring yellow.
Toyota maintained its vicelike grip with a third of total sales as shown below or about half of all non-Kei cars sales if they were extracted from the figures. Lexus went so close to overtaking Mercedes-Benz but will have to wait in another year at least. Is the Lexus marque now coming of age on its own turf?
As for import brands, there were some useful improvements in a market where their presence is minimal. The Tesla total is an estimate of reasonable accuracy (even if I do say so myself). Aston Martin has over doubled its 2020 registration and I assume that must be the DBX effect although I don't have a breakdown by model to prove it.
