A new Honda, straight out of the box |
The overwhelming impression you get when seeing the top-selling models in Japan is that despite tariff protection, it is totally dominated by local models. So to make the list have some variance, yellow is regular Japanese cars, pale blue Kei models and green imports. Even then I'm cheating as it is all MINI models combined. Well, that's how the importer's association classifies releases import sales by model.

This new model has raised the bar |
The most popular models are of the Kei variety, diminutive and largely exclusive to the domestic market. I did an article on sales of just such cars which can be seen by clicking here. The government adjusts the benefits Kei buyers receive and recently cut them back so they don't get too dominant. This allowed some regular models to encroach on their space. The Vitz is switching over to the Yaris moniker with this new model and it nearly stole the show.
