With no import duty and local brands accounting for nearly 93% of total sales, one has to wonder how that happens. Perhaps a tremendous sense of loyalty is a major factor. The Kei car segment also plays a part. Toyota is virtually revered in its home market, so that helps too.
The month of December was +11% and the full-year figure is -11% which shows that the current situation hasn't hit Japan as hard as other place and the year ended well. Toyota increased its share to 33.7% and gained on second-placed Honda. Imports were -5% in December and -15% for the year with Mercedes leading the minuscule foreign brand charge. VW passed BMW but both lost ground, just that one lost more ground than the other.
