Ford/Lincoln NA Production (Model) : 2017-18

Ford has made no secret of its desire to end car production (the Mustang will stay) and concentrate on light trucks, or utility vehicles. The idea is there is little money in cars but there is more to the picture than that, unless you are an accountant.

Cars promote foot traffic in dealerships. Take cars away and people that may have gone to buy a car but been talked into a light truck will simply not visit the Ford showroom. It will be interesting to see how that pans out, once cars are gone.

USA: Car volume is down to 11% in the USA, thanks to a 33% drop in production volume. Truck assembly is flat which caused a 4% overall reduction in units made. The Mustang held up pretty well which is the one car assembled in the US that its keeping.

The F-Series is the biggie and I'm sure the margin on these would more than satisfy any bean counter. The truck range is extensive and another model has been added, the Ranger. Light trucks are the way forward although I'm surprised Ford is pulling the pin on cars so early.

Mexico: Being a car maker for Ford isn't a nice place to be and that is all they make in Mexico. All small car production is going to be done here, lower wages the obvious advantage.

Combined: Cars made up just 18.8% of all production in North America. With a 23% fall, it caused the total to drop 5% and production is now just below 3 million. It will be interesting to see what 2019 will bring.
