South Africa Sales : 2022

Registrations for December were up 15% and for the year +19%. Figures are supposed to be distorted by supply issues but maybe not so much here. The '+/- diff' column below is for market share change so for example VW was about the same as last year for volume but took a battering on market share.

Toyota has long been the biggest brand when including light commercials but since 2010 VW has held the top spot for passenger cars...until 2022 when Toyota suddenly opened a cavernous lead. Suzuki has been gaining ground, presumably getting much of its stock from India. It now holds a very solid third spot.

Renault has upped its share to 7.5% and now is shadowing Hyundai. Mahindra too is doing well and Opel suddenly had a surge in sales. BMW and MINI sales are not separated every month so there had to be some estimating on that.

Chery left the market in around 2017 but decided to make a comeback and started sales again at the end of 2021. They have built up quickly from there and started publishing figures in July so the data below counts from that month. Clearly, the figure shown isn't a total figure but why the importer hasn't released the first six months I find strange. I'm thinking it's about 11,500 but I went with the 8,000 official figure.
