Hyundai Global Passenger Car Sales : 2020 (By Model)

Hyundai's factory sales were down 19%, with local output -12% and overseas numbers while overseas they were -23%. Hyundai passenger car sales in Korea were up slightly. In addition, having the home market protected with steep tariffs enables the company to attack the world car market from a solid foundation. So how did sales dip like they did?

In a word China. Hyundai is big there and with registrations down over a third or 242,500 fewer units hurt. That was nearly a third of all lost sales in a country. Of course, there's still more than half a million sales disappeared elsewhere but often in countries badly affected by the coronavirus.

Models: The Tucson is the leading model but its factory sales dropped from 16.4% in 2019 to 14.0% of the total. The Kona has been a big mover, from 7.7% to 9.4%. Clearly, customers are taking the time to smell the coffee. The new Sonata went from 9th to 7th and the newish Palisade and Venue have both settled into the family nicely. The Grandeur benefitted from a facelift.

Factory sales by country:
The percentage of factory sales for China dropped from 16.1% to 13.4%. There was an evenness about many of the decreases but not one facility could manage to equal 2019. Vietnam was the closest. Domestic production is taking a larger share of the total, up to 39.1% and the highest since 2012.
