Honda Production History UK : 1989-2015

Honda cars have been made in the UK since 1989, but by Honda itself since 1992. The first car made was by Rover, the Concerto. Honda's first effort at its own plant in Swindon was the Accord. In all, five models have been made in Britain, as can be seen below:

Honda best years were 2007 and 2008 but the downturn of 2009 knocked things back. They mothballed one of the two assembly lines which remains inactive. Any moderate increase in volume could be handled by the existing line.

The Jazz will soon be deleted and the new model sourced from Japan. The CR-V will also leave in a coupe of years as its model cycle ends. The new CR-V will come from Canada. This will leave just the 5-door hatch Civic but it will be the only plant in the world making it. It is estimated production will be about 120,000. I personally feel one model exposes a factory to cyclical volume fluctuation but I guess that has been weighed up by the accountants.

  1. Really good blog. I'm interested knowing more re this table - do you have production numbers for all UK based companies and what is the source?
