The 500L has been a solid performer |
2010-14. Fiat's response seemed to be to cut back on development costs. It's best selling cars were small where margins are wafer thin so older models soldiered on. The third generation Punto was introduced in 2005 and having to compete with newer cars. The Panda was replaced in 2011 but it shared its platform with some other models.
The new 500 and 500L models were certainly a welcome addition, again benefiting with sharing development costs. Otherwise it was about trimming the range. European market share headed down to around the 4.5% mark and was now in 9th place.

The 500X crossover is doing well |
2015-19. The 500X was added and was a strong seller. The Panda continued to hold its own and the new Tipo went well. Despite all that registrations were fairly flat and market share fell to 4% and 11th place in 2019. The 2005 Punto was retained far too long but finally killed off in 2018. the current Panda came out in 2011 so it's getting long in the tooth as is the 500L.
Fiat needs to reinvent itself. The future in Europe seems to be electric and Fiat is well placed to sell small, efficient cars with that mode of power. The main challenge will be the arrival of cheap electric Chinese cars.
