NZ Passenger Car Sales : 2023

Registrations were a roller coaster this year in NZ, mainly due to artificial manipulation of the market. An earlier cutting back on the amount of rebate for more environmentally friendly vehicles caused a rush for cars that would be more expensive from July 1st. It caused an 81% spike in sales in June, followed by a 46% fall in July.

Then a recent change of government led to the sudden scrapping of the rebate/feebate scheme altogether. This led to many holding back purchasing or putting it forward depending on the vehicle. The latest move had a balancing effect so only a 5% fall. Still, it shows that artificial manipulation of the market via incentives or disincentives has this effect each time they are adjusted. I assume January will see another jump in sales as buyers who held off purchasing go ahead with it.

Toyota is back at the top and has the highest market share since 2010. Its switch to a fixed, no haggle pricing structure a few years ago may have taken time for acceptance. Mitsubishi's brief foray into market leadership looks to be well and truly over. Perhaps they had better access to stock when others struggled in that regard.

BYD turned up last year and is almost in the top ten. Incentives to buy electric has helped immensely but electric car buyers do seem to be less brand conscious. GWM or Great Wall Motors is expanding its range of vehicles here. It already does Haval but also the Ora electric brand. The Tank 4x4 will be added too.

MG has reached its best market share ever of 5.5%. Conversely, LDV isn't going well at all. Ineos has just arrived so let's see how that goes. For a small market, there is plenty of choice and that will surely increase as more Chinese brands arrive in the future. That said, no SEAT car have been sold for three months and the importer has decided the future is its sister brand Cupra.

Used imports are faring well, keeping pace with new cars numerically. All but a few are sourced from Japan. The 'Diff' column below shows market share change.
