Registrations for December were up 6% and for the year +19%. Overall a fine improvement but after the lows of recent years, very much needed. Pent up demand would have been building here as in many other places but has it been largely satisfied? The slowing toward the end of the year would indicate 2024 won't be anything exceptional in a positive way.
In 1960, Fiat had over 76% of the market but protectionism is long gone and here we are, Fiat holding just 11%. That's the lowest percentage the company has had. Yet despite that, its top spot isn't being threatened. That said, VW was the best selling brand in December and I wonder if that has happened before?
After years of seemingly going nowhere, local brand DR Motors is making some headway. The new Tonale (picture below) is lifting Alfa Romeo sales from its all time low of 0.8% in 2021 and 1.1% in 2022 to 1.7% so far.
Unlike many other markets, Tesla is not having that much of an impact here. Lotus meanwhile had it's best sales result since 1999 when they sold 142 cars.
The 'Diff' column below shows market share change.
