UK September (2017) Sales Revealing

The Nissan Qashqai being interviewed about its September success

It's rarely that one moth tells us much but September 2017 is one such month in the UK. This is the second big month of the year due to change of number plates. A clearer picture came from it.

US brands: Ford continues to lead quite comfortably but the margin is being eroded. A balance between staying at the top and being profitable is the tightrope walk it is making. Jeep meanwhile is falling badly, as it is in many European markets.

German brands. Unsurprisingly an aggressive stance is being adopted. In September they held 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th. A weak pound maybe, but volume must be maintained.

UK brands: JLR and MINI are holding their ground but not chasing sales. The best long term policy.

French brands. Now including Vauxhall, there is no desire to maintain market share and sales tumbled in September. Vauxhall may have been 2nd since 1989, but no room for sentiment here. It looks certain to be 3rd by years end and drop from there in 2018.

Asian brands. Generally doing OK, not into market share hunting but not slumping either. An Asian brand being the top selling model is impressive. The UK designed and built Nissan Qashqai is a fine vehicle and thoroughly deserves its success. Hopefully not a just a flash in the pan.

Other Euro. Fiat is the same as the French brands and Volvo like the UK ones.

In summary, car companies have shown their hand as far as the UK is concerned. A weaker currency and sales moving to more realistic levels make the situation a challenging one. In turn, that produces reactions and they have been revealing.

  2. Hello Anon, I was speaking on the Internet straight after I wrote this and someone said that was the case. Appreciate you pointing it out too as I didn't amend the article, which I have now.
