Malaysia Car Sales : 2017

The Perodua Alza is a popular model

Sales were flat in 2017, better than last year's effort. Because it is a protected market, the car companies that manufacture here dominate. You could safely say the top half of the list below has some sort of local assembly and the bottom half doesn't. Notice how the lower half is all in the negative too.

Proton was historically the most popular make, manufacturing cars that were based on Mitsubishi technology. In 2006, the other local brand Perodua took over the lead and now enjoys around 35% of all sales. It's vehicles are Daihatsu models, which in turn is part of the Toyota empire.

In 2017, Honda was a big mover and Proton enjoyed a mini revival in the sense of a sizable drop in sales was averted. Meanwhile Nissan has hit a wall it seems. MPV vehicles are popular as is the case in many Asian nations so if a brand's range includes a strong presence there, things will go well in Malaysia.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the market share of 2017 against the 2016 year.
