Japan Car Sales By Model : 2017

Below are two lists, one for local and one for imports. They are separate because all the best selling models are Japanese so at least this way we can see some imported models. The Kei car is one of the advantages for local products. It literally means light car and has has preferential rates of tax and insurance. In rural areas they are exempt from having to provide proof of a parking place. In turban areas, some roads are marked for kei-cars only, as well as some car parks.

The best selling model is the Honda N-Box, a Kei car. Then comes a normal car, the Prius followed by two more Kei cars from Daihatsu. Moving down form there is becomes clear that Toyota is the brand in Japan, with 16 of the 40 listed here. Brands such as Subaru, Mazda and Mitsubishi may be big sellers elsewhere but in the land of the rising sun, they struggle to get a look in.

With imports its mainly German brands that do well. However, it's the MINI that leads the import race, from long time leader the VW Golf and a couple of Merc models. VW would have lost 'face' over its scandal, something very important in Asian culture. I have counted the MINI as a UK model rather than a BMW in case you're wondering.
