USA Car Sales : 2017

GM has been the top brand for so many decades. I have data going back to 1946 and GM was easily the top selling brand back then. GM has achieved this with many sub-brands. However, this is by nameplate and in that case Ford is the boss brand and with few exceptions has remained such for many years as well.

Sales were down 1.7%, compared with +0.5% last year. Light trucks grew 4.3% and passenger cars were -10.9%. The swing away from cars continues unabated, with the split now 60/40 favouring light trucks.

In such a large market, things change slowly so even small differences need to be noted. Subaru slipped ahead of Kia, VW and BMW passed Lexus, Audi swapped placed with Chrysler, Tesla's estimated figure had it overtake MINI and Jaguar did likewise to Fiat. One big mover was Alfa Romeo, which was no surprise with new models available. Scion is about finished and the last sales trickled along in 2017.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the market share of 2017 against the 2016 year.
