Russia Car/LCV Sales : 2017

Back in 2008, Russia was booming and car sales were approaching 3 million. The economic downturn and subsequent political issues has seen sales fall to a shadow of their former glory. 2017 car sales reveal things are starting to turn around. Sales were up 15% in June and +7% for the first six months and ended +12%.

Lada has been the main brand since way back when. Cars made locally do have tariff protection but Lada is just one of several brands now made here. Sales of Lada hit a low of 15.5% share in 2014, but improved vehicles and cost cutting has seen the brand fare much better, both in sales and the balance sheet. In 2017, it's close to 1 in 5 cars sold in Russia

Of the other brands, Kia is doing well this year as it pulls away from its sibling Hyundai. LCV make UAZ is not doing so well. Audi wasn't able to take advantage of improved conditions.

For car companies that solely import, It has been difficult to be profitable with the depreciation Russia has experienced. Most importers have been wearing the losses until better times return. However, Opel has quit already but others are taking a long term view. I am thinking under PSA, Opel may return soon.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the market share of 2017 against the 2016 year.
