Korea Car Sales : 2017

Will the new Genesis marque make a big splash?

Korea has a well protected vehicle market so you have the local manufacturers at the top and the imports well down in numbers sold. Imports were 233,000 compared to a total of 1,530,000. That's 15% import brands and that is lower if commercial vehicles are added.

Kia is the biggest brand with 29.8% for the YTD, with Hyundai in 29.6%. Add Genesis and that's over 60% for that one company. GM Korea, Ssangyong and Renault Samsung are small in comparison but still are ahead of any import marque.

As for the rest, Mercedes-Benz is doing well but Audi has been all but stopped over the defeat device saga. VW has ceased altogether in 2017. Bentley was severely affected in 2016 despite not being part of the problem. I see they have come back this year but whether that is a permanent reprieve I don't know. Porsche seems to be unscathed so far for some reason.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the market share of 2017 against the 2016 year. If the data seems different compared to other sources, it's because this excludes any commercial vehicles.
