South Africa Car Sales Jan-Jun 2017

Passenger car sales have been falling in the RSA for a few years now, with 2017 holding its own against 2016 but someway short of the better years. June was down 1.4% and YTD 3.9% lower. The data is from Naamsa, but not all sales are reported to that organisation. Next year it will include Hyundai and Kia, brands for which no data was ever released.

If light commercials were added it would paint a very different picture. Toyota would be miles ahead and Ford snapping at VW's heals. As it is we are looking at cars and VW took over in that department in 2010 from Toyota. VW's success with cars is built around two Polo models, one current and the other an older version.

In the chart below, the Bentley figure for 2016 isn't a full year. MINI was separate in 2016 but for 2017 it is included with BMW. Despite that, 7% market share was lost. Opel is not part of GM for 2017, and The General is leaving the market altogether. Land Rover lost sales with its main model - the Discovery - not being available for some time with a new one having just arrived in July.
