UK Car Sales Jan-Jun 2017

Registrations for June were down 5% and the YTD figure is -1%. That's not a huge figure but the UK market has been over performing for some time now, so this is expected; it was just a matter of when. Surely this will continue but where that will go to I don't anyone knows with any certainty.

The lower pound will be affecting importers margins so how did they handle that in June? GM's Vauxhall imports virtually all of its cars and sales slumped 18%. French brands fell as well, Peugeot (-12%), Citroen (-22%), Renault (-20%) and DS (-51%). German brands took their usual aggressive attitude, with VW leading the way with a +18% (despite its non-compensating stance). All managed some sort of increase.

On the chart we see that Vauxhall Is being caught by VW and I would say that now seems inevitable. Mercedes Benz overtook its two Germanic main rivals, while Kia replaced Peugeot in the top ten list. Land Rover is now at 12th, a remarkable effort.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the first six month's market share of 2017 against the full 2016 year.
