RSA Car/LCV Sales - Brand / 2016

One gets the impression that things are on a gradual slide in South Africa. Car/LCV sales had their third year of decrease and 2016 was not unsubstantial at -11.3%. Passenger cars were -12.4% and light commercial vehicles -8.7%.

In the list below, yellow represents decreased sales, pale blue decrease but improved market share, green increase in share. The top three brands took exactly 50% of all sales.

Toyota has been the top brand for so long and although sales were -4.6%, it was better than the total sales decline. Therefore it's coloured pale blue. The Hilux was the leading model with 31.5% of all sales.

VW is the most popular passenger car brand but is no match for Toyota once LCVs are added. The Polo and Polo Vivo models between them account for an astounding 70% of all VW sales.

Ford nearly got into second spot with registrations just 433 shy of achieving that. The Ranger pick up truck represented 44% of all Blue Oval sales.

Of the others, Hyundai and Kia are estimates as the importer for those brands only releases a total figure. Mazda did a good job of increasing sales in challenging market conditions.
