The big news in the NZ car market for 2014 was the emergence of the Ford Ranger pick-up truck. Not only did it overtake the long time favourite the Toyota Hilux but nearly took out the darling of the rental fleet too, the Corolla. Toyota NZ's response to the Hilux being passed by the Ranger was to say that if you only count 4wd pick-up trucks, then we still are top. Sometimes you just have to take it on the chin and be gracious about it.
Japanese brands are popular in the 'land of the long white cloud'. They make cars that are reliable and have established the dealer network to keep them popular. European brands want to muscle in but it takes years to undo reputations of poorer reliability and get the dealers covering the country. In the smallish town I live in, there are no European brands sold here. All the top Asian ones are though, as are Ford and GM Holden.
