Land Rover Sales RSA By Model: 2004-2015

Land Rovers are an integral part of the landscape of South Africa. Old movie footage of remote places in Africa invariably showed a LR traversing arid land or fording a muddy stream or river. Popular game parks always had LRs to ferry wide eyed clients from one amazing wildlife experience to another. I believe LR developed an electric LR for safari parks, this being less likely to disturb the animals.

Back in '04, the Defender was the biggest seller and still held its own to the end. The Range Rovers is a modest selling model, overshadowd by the RR Sport. Interestingly, when the RR Sport arrived, it had no effect on RR sales at all. The big seller however is the Discovery and it even held off the seductive Evoque. The new Discovery Sport is going to be a popular vehicle.

Please note that in the chart below, I don't have a separation in sales for the RR and RR Sport in 2005, so I estimated them based on an accurate total. This is an updated article.

Yr Disco RR Sp Dis Sp Evoque Defend R Rov Freel Total

04 890 - - - 970 160 810 2,830

05 1,810 130 - - 960 160 780 3,840

06 2,570 710 - - 660 180 440 4,560

07 2,320 940 - - 820 190 1,460 5,730

08 1,760 830 - - 930 140 1,080 4,740

09 1,650 580 - - 760 160 830 3,980

10 2,210 700 - - 780 220 930 4,840

11 2,550 720 - 640 630 240 980 5,760

12 2,740 690 - 2,100 780 170 980 7,460

13 2,600 720 - 2,190 600 450 960 7,520

14 2,000 1,410 - 1,590 440 300 530 6,270

15 1,620 1,170 1,140 1,120 470 300 30 5,850

Tot 24,720 8,600 1,140 7,640 8,800 2,670 9,810 63,380

The Defender will be missed but sales of late have been down somewhat. Overall, LR is a strong selling brand in the RSA. The last few years have not been so good, but the market as a whole is down. Over 63,000 in 12 years is quite a tally.
